The Height of Faith – Leaders
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: Remember the life and teaching of your leaders.
- Leaders are to be identified.
- Leaders have distinct responsibilities.
- Leaders are to be followed.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: Can you think of certain Christian leaders who are (or have been) especially inspiring to you? What is it about these leaders that motivates you?
- How do God’s people discern when God is raising up leaders? What does 1 Timothy 3:1-7 say about calling and character? What does Titus 1:9 say about competence?
- In our form of government, we prayerfully recognize and receive God’s appointment of leaders. How does this process add meaning to later instructions to obey and submit to such leaders (13:17)?
- Leaders have certain responsibilities before God. Review these responsibilities in Hebrews 13:7-9. How can you encourage your leaders to fulfill this charge?
- Jesus Christ is our ultimate leader, and He does not change, v. 8. It may follow that those who have issues with church leadership really have an issue with God’s authority in Christ. In what way do you see these issues among God’s people today?
Taking it Home: Spend group time praying for your small group leaders and church elders. Remember the evidence of their call, character and competencies. Take a moment to tell your leaders what you appreciate about them. Send a card or note of appreciation today.
If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. Pastor Jeff will meet you at the Welcome Center, where you can also receive a special gift when you turn in a Communication Card.
LIVE IT OUT
Aspen Ridge Church leadership is pleased to announce important developments alongside our “Live It Out” initiative. You may read about these on our church website, located under the “Blog” tab, with a blog from Pastor Jeff and one from Eric Krajewski. This weekend, we will thank and honor Bob Blake for his role as Director of Small Groups, and officially welcome Eric Krajewski into this role.
MILITARY SERVICE PROJECT REQUEST
If you have anyone in your immediate family (parent, child, grandchild) serving in one of the military branches, please drop off a color 4 x 6 picture, with name and address, to the church office. We (the Waggoner small group) desire to update the military board and reach out to military service members with care packages and prayer.
FEBRUARY MEN’S BREAKFAST
Our next Men’s Breakfast scheduled for February 10 at 8:00 AM in the Celebration Center will have a special focus on men as husbands (or prospective/future husbands). We will hear a devotional talk from Joe Hall, a current participant in Aspen Ridge Impact Player and with experience in walking alongside Christian marriages in the local church. Please plan to join us and invite a friend!

DV8 MIDDLE SCHOOL WINTER CAMP
DV8 will be doing a new winter camp March 2-4 for middle school, put on through Converge Rocky Mountain. The signups have started, and money is due by February 11. Stop by the student center to pick up a flyer and info, or email Pastor Kreg.
THE GOD WHO IS THERE
Most people do not have a basic working knowledge of the Bible. How can we understand the story of God—and our part in it—when we’re not familiar with it? In this basic introduction to faith, D.A. Carson takes you through the big story of Scripture to help you know what you believe and why you believe it. Pastor Jeff and Dan Dube are hosting this course on Wednesday nights (6:30 – 7:50 PM).
UPCOMING TOPICS IN HEBREWS
In the coming weeks, Pastor Jeff will address the general topic of the Christian church in relationship to her leaders. Have you ever wondered how leaders are selected and for what they are responsible? The next few weeks will provide practical instruction for how to relate with and toward leaders.
Join us for prayer on Sunday mornings, downstairs in the Fireside Room from 10:15 - 10:40 AM. This is a special time to pray for our weekend services and the advance of the gospel. There is also a student-led group meeting during this time; please see Pastor Kreg for details.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT DINNER
Dinner is served at 5:30 PM on Wednesday nights. This week, our menu includes taco salad and dessert for $2.50/person or $10/family.
