The Height of Faith - Faith in a Doubting World
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: Faith is the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen.
- First, faith means receiving hoped for and unseen things.
- Second, faith is the way people receive commendation from God.
- Third, faith is the way people may understand the created order.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: When asked about the most important things in life, many people will include “faith, family and friends.” However, faith means different things to different people. What does faith mean to you?
- One important word at the beginning (v. 1) and end (v. 3) of this passage is “unseen.” Faith is the capacity to see and receive unseen things. What are some unseen things you see or receive by faith?
- There are some important foundations that stand behind faith (v. 6). What are these two commitments? In what way are these commitments in place in your life?
- Our culture has some misunderstandings about faith. Discuss:
a) Faith is in opposition to human reason and/or science. However, this passage says, “by faith we understand…” Robust Christian faith is not in opposition to reason.
b.) Faith is equal to any kind of spirituality… its object does not matter. It is a life of devotion to any god or higher power. However, the object of faith matters a great deal (v.6).)
- Faith has special relationship to God’s declarative word (v. 3). Review what Jesus said about God’s speech in Scripture (John 17:17; John 10:35). How reliable a foundation is the Bible for your faith?
Taking it Home: It always requires a step of faith to bring unseen things to fruition or reality in life. Where is God calling you to take a step of faith? What will this look like? Tell a member of your small group and ask them to pray for you this week.
If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. Pastor Jeff will meet you at the Welcome Center, where you can also receive a special gift when you turn in a Communication Card.
WORSHIP ARTS INTERIM
Please welcome Matt Johnson as he officially begins his duties as our Interim Director of Worship Arts. We are excited to see what God has in store! You can find out more about Matt in the blog post on our website.
ASPEN RIDGE CONSTRUCTION
Thank you for your patience as our church building is undergoing extensive upgrades and renovations. If you are interested in reading more, check out our website or Facebook page. Please note that our playground is not safely accessible during portions of this remodel, and kids and parents are asked to observe signage in that area for your safety.
Join us for prayer downstairs in the Fireside Room from 10:15 to 10:40 AM on Sunday mornings. This is a special time to pray for our weekend services, the fulfillment of the Great Commission and the advance of the gospel. There is also a student-led group meeting during this time; please see Pastor Kreg for details.
In the coming weeks, (God-willing) our construction upgrades will be complete. Leadership would like to dedicate ourselves and this ministry to the Lord in a fresh, new way. We will set apart the weekend of October 21/22 for a “Building Commitment,” including prayer in our patio area after our Saturday service and in-between our Sunday services. Gather with us in a prayer circle, believing that God uses prayer as a means of connecting us to His plans and purposes.
LIVE IT OUT
Thanks to all who are contributing to Live It Out as we intentionally reach out to our community in practical and loving ways. To contribute, note “Live It Out” on or with your gift. Gifts (pledged and unpledged) received to date: $101,617
Remaining pledged amount: $ 34,794
Aspen Ridge Church would like to thank Debbie Stewart for putting together RidgeFest this weekend, celebrating local vendors and bringing neighbors together for a fun family event. There were over 40 vendors signed up to participate, and the community has taken notice of and supported this annual celebration, in its fifth year. Thanks to all who have helped make it a success!
CHILDREN’S MINISTRY LUNCHEON
Let’s talk about Children’s Ministry. If you are volunteering, or interested in volunteering, there will be a training luncheon on Sunday, October 22, in the Fellowship Hall from 12:00 – 1:00 PM. We’ll bring the lunch – you bring the ideas!
WEDNESDAY NIGHT DINNER
Dinner is served at 5:30 PM on Wednesday nights. This week, our menu includes baked chicken, mashed potatoes, vegetables, salad and dessert for $2.50/person or $10/family. All are welcome.
SWEDEN SHOW & TELL TOUR
Aspen Ridge is looking forward to hosting the Sweden Show & Tell Tour through Converge Worldwide in our Saturday evening service on October 7. Join us for an evening of indie-pop music, worship music, teaching, preaching, sharing and networking. This team is from Sweden under the leadership of John van Dinther and Jenny Wahlström, who are part of the lead team in the New Life Network, a church planting movement in Sweden within the EFK (InterAct) denomination. We’re excited to host this special evening!
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
Get ready to make an impact in a child’s life! We will be filling boxes with school supplies and toys to send to a child who may never have received a gift. The shoebox will also send the good news of Jesus. Boxes will be available in the lobby beginning the weekend of October 7/8.
Donated nonperishable food items received in the lobby bins located by the front doors and at the bottom of the stairwell will now go to LifeBridge Food Pantry in Bailey. Thank you for supporting our community in this way.
