The Height of Faith - Last Will and Testament
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: A last will and testament comes into effect alongside death.
- God’s n______ will came into effect alongside death.
- God’s o_______ will came into effect alongside death.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: This passage involves the application of a legal principle to the Christian faith. What experience or exposure have you had to the practice of law?
- The central idea of this passage comes from verses 16,17. Without a death, a last will and testament does not come into effect. How does this hold true today?
- One of the prominent questions for the Christian faith is simply this: “Why did Jesus have to die for God to demonstrate his love toward us?” (Romans 5:8). How does verse 15 answer this question?
- A discussion about inheritance includes a look at what happens on the other side. What does Hebrews 11:8-10 say about our Christian inheritance?
- The old covenant was confirmed and validated alongside the death of animals. This leads the author of Hebrews to make a summary statement: “Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.” How and in what way is this true?
Taking it Home: Forgiveness is a complex subject, and may be a process. At all events, it is fundamental to Christian faith (Matthew 6:14-15). If you struggle with forgiveness, bring your struggle to God this week, aware of the rich resources in the Christian faith for your own forgiveness…and the forgiveness of others.
If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. Pastor Jeff will meet you at the Welcome Center, where you can also receive a special gift when you turn in a Communication Card. Due to security concerns, the message from last week was not recorded and not posted on the website. In addition, please do not post or share any info from last week or from special guests who are sharing in today's service. Thank you.
OPEN HOUSE INVITATION
There will be an informal open house at Norm and Kathy Lewis' house from 2:00 – 5:00 PM today for the Thibodeaus and the Jones. Please come to get to know them more, learn what God is doing in North Africa, as well as learn a number of ways that you can be connected and involved. All are welcome.
We will hold a Baptism Weekend on Sunday, August 27. This is in the way of Jesus’ Great Commission “…make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” If you are interested, please contact a church leader or a member of our pastoral staff. Further, we will be hosting two orientation meetings (and you may choose one to attend). These include Sunday, August 13, at 10:15 AM and at 4:00 PM in Pastor Jeff’s office.
ASPEN RIDGE CONSTRUCTION
