The Height of Faith - Consider a Great Priest
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: Consider how great a priest Melchizedek really was!
- Melchizedek received a tithe from Abraham.
- Melchizedek extended a blessing to Abraham
- Melchizedek is a “type” of one who lives forever.
- Melchizedek received a tithe from Levi.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: The author of Hebrews says that we should “consider Melchizedek” (7:4). How well do you know and understand the Old Testament? Why do you think the Old Testament is neglected?
- Abraham represents the nation and people of Israel, and Melchizedek is a “type” or foreshadowing of Jesus Christ. The Old Testament (and Judaism) exists in a subordinate position to the New Testament (and Christianity). Discuss.
- Messianic Judaism is a movement toward observance of Old Testament law (including its dietary and ceremonial practices). This movement is unhelpful and dangerous for the Christian gospel. Why?
- God is the source of blessing. In this (ultimate) sense, a blessing always comes from a superior to an inferior. Note the various aspects of blessing in Numbers 6:22-27. Since Abraham receives a blessing from Melchizedek, the author of Hebrews is asserting that blessing comes through the Son of God.
Taking it Home: Let me invite you to take the “tithe” challenge. If you are not currently tithing to your local Christian church, take a step of faith and begin doing so for one month. At the end of the month review your relationship with God and your financial condition. Assess and discuss with a trusted Christian friend.
Today is Move-Up Sunday for our Children and Students Ministries. Congratulations! If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. Pastor Jeff will meet you at the Welcome Center.
LET’S GET TOGETHER
Because we know that family schedules change in the summer, Aspen Ridge will experiment with a modified “Summer Refresh schedule” in 2017. Beginning the weekend of June 3/4, we will suspend our Saturday evening services and offer the regular Sunday morning services of 9:00 and 10:45 AM. We do see an important future for our Saturday Night Service, and will return to our regular schedule (including Saturday Night Service at 6:00 PM) the weekend after Labor Day: September 9/10. In the meantime, we see this as an opportunity to “get together” with one another on Sundays this summer!
SUMMER REFRESH EVENT!
As part of our Summer Refresh schedule, we want to take a night to celebrate and have a fun evening of music and food in the beautiful outdoors of Evergreen. On Saturday July 8, starting at 5:30 PM here at the church, we will get together outside for a meal. Meat, drinks and paper goods will be provided by the church, please bring a side dish or dessert to share. Then at 6:30 PM, we will follow that with a concert from our friend Danny Byram. Please brings chairs and blankets to settle in and enjoy the music. Mark your calendar to join us Saturday, July 8 for this refreshing night!
We are accepting nominations through Sunday, June 12 for candidates to be considered to join the Elder Board. Forms are available in the church office. Contact an elder with any questions you may have.

LIVE IT OUT
Live It Out is a strategic initiative toward fulfilling a vision that every person in our community would experience the love of God in a practical way through Aspen Ridge Church. This involves building and mobilizing our small group network toward service projects in our community. One of our aims is to hire a “Director of Small Groups” who would continue to build our small group ministry. Norm Lewis is the chairman of this search team with Pastor Jeff and Michelle Force. We have received several applications for this position. We covet your prayers as we begin to identify those who may be the best fit for this important ministry.
UPDATE IN CHILDREN’S MINISTRY
We are pleased to announce that Debbie Stewart is moving from the Assistant Director position to the Interim Director position in Children’s Ministry. Also, Meredith Zouski is stepping into a Summer Intern role. We are excited about this transition and look forward to a successful VBS and a continued strength in our Children’s Ministry!
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
VBS is June 5-9, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Our theme is "Maker Fun Factory: Created by God and Built for a Purpose. Please keep this important week in your prayers, for the kids coming and the volunteers working!
DV8 is combining middle and high school for the summer. We will now meet on Thursday nights for both groups. June begins our Back Porch nights and we will meet from 6:00 - 9:00 PM. We would love to see you there!
