MESSAGE NOTES

New Year’s Reflection – Pursuing God’s Heart
Proverbs 4:23
Pastor Kreg Kastelz

Question: How can we get closer to being a person after God’s own heart?

  • What is the heart?
  • What qualities did David have that made him a man after God’s own heart?
  • How can we work on this in our own lives?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

Digging Deeper:

  1. What are some other ways you would describe the heart of a human being? If you have access to a biblical search engine, look up a few of the verses talking about the heart and discuss. (There are a lot in the Bible!)
  2. If you forget that faith in Christ is truly the first step in fixing our hearts, it can cause problems, especially if you try to skip to fixing actions (in your own life or in others’ lives). Have you ever witnessed this in your life or in the world around you? What was the outcome?
  3. The three elements we discussed about David were his spirituality, humility and integrity. If you are familiar with David’s story, what other attributes did he possess that contributed to being a man after God’s own heart?
  4. Of the 3 attributes we talked about with David, we all probably have different degrees of each one. Which of these attributes is your strongest and weakest? What is a possible next step we could take in these areas to become better at them?
Spirituality: Walking alongside God daily, having His heart on issues, seeing things as He does.
Humility: Servant heartedness, working for the glory of your boss, understanding God controls everything.
Integrity: Doing what’s right when no one’s around, doing the right thing even if it’s not in your best interest.

Taking it Home: Take some time to reflect on your own heart. (The place where your emotions, thoughts and desires dwell - who you are!) Does your heart resemble what we know of God’s heart? Are there any areas you could work on? Going into the new year, try to take a practical next step towards molding your heart to more closely resemble God’s and get closer to Him.

NEWCOMERS RECEPTION

We would like to welcome Pastor Kreg Kastelz as our speaker this weekend. Kreg is our Associate Pastor of Student Ministries. If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. Kreg will meet you at the Welcome Center, where you can also receive a special gift when you turn in a Communication Card.

BAPTISM WEEKEND

Baptism services will be the weekend of January 13/14. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact the church office.

THE BRIDGE

The Bridge provides an orientation to Aspen Ridge Church life. Those who are new to us, who want to discover a small group and who want to find a way to serve are invited. Dinner will be provided, and the session is scheduled on January 7 from 4:00 - 7:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall, with childcare available. Contact the church office to reserve your spot.

THE GOD WHO IS THERE

Most people do not have a basic working knowledge of the Bible. How can we understand the story of God—and our part in it—when we’re not familiar with it? In this basic introduction to faith, D.A. Carson takes you through the big story of Scripture to help you know what you believe and why you believe it. Pastor Jeff and Dan Dube will host this course on Wednesday nights (6:30 – 7:50 PM) beginning on January 10.

MEN’S BREAKFAST

For our regular men’s breakfast, on Saturday January 13 at 8:00 AM, Aspen Ridge will host Barry Schroeder, Evergreen Bank Manager for FirstBank. Barry will speak about “Best Financial Practices” for 2018 and beyond. This would be a great opportunity to bring a friend!
