Human - Wilderness: David & Engedi
1 Samuel 23
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: Your relationship with God may be strengthened through wilderness trials.
- David’s wilderness experience.
- David’s deepening relationship.
- “Dos and don’ts” in the wilderness.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: At one time or another, most of us have had experiences driving through a desert. What sorts of feelings or impressions did the desert engender in you?
- The wilderness serves as a corollary for difficulties and challenges in life. What are some of your challenges? How does the wilderness provide an opportunity for you to strip away less-essential things and simplify? What can you learn and how can you grow?
- David’s indirect encounter with Saul has all the ingredients of a vulgar story (the king on his throne, an opportunity to stab in the back, an occasion for jokes). However, David does not lower himself to vulgarity in the wilderness. Discuss.
- This message contained “Dos & Don’ts” in the wilderness, which you do well to review. Which of these did you especially need to hear? How are you going forward with an application?
Taking it Home: Receiving a new, fresh sense of hope is vital to sustaining your relationship with God through wilderness trials. The order of God’s plot is “creation, fall, reconciliation, restoration.” Read Revelation 21-22, and ask God to restore your hope toward His future for you.
If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. On Saturday, Pastor Jeff will be available in the Celebration Center, and on Sunday, he will meet you at the Welcome Center.
VIEW FROM THE RIDGE ANNUAL MEETINGS
In an effort to provide opportunities for as many as possible, we will have a time after each service during the weekend of September 17/18 for our annual View from the Ridge. This gathering allows us to propose and vote on the budget for the new fiscal year (beginning September 1), hear reports from ministry leaders from the past year and envision the year ahead together, as God leads. If you are a member or are interested in membership, we strongly encourage you to attend one of the following meetings, in support of this body of believers:
- Saturday, September 17 at 7:15 PM
- Sunday, September 18 at 10:15 AM
- Sunday, September 18 at 12:00 PM (with potluck lunch)
Parents, we know it’s tough raising kids in today’s culture. We want to help. During the weekend of September 24/25, we’ll be focusing on parenting topics in our regular services. We’ll also have some mini-sessions at RidgeFest, designed to help parents with kids - from toddlers to teens. There are also plans in the works for a parenting-focused small group. Contact Maryjean Fowler or Debbie Stewart for more information.
SMALL GROUP INVITATION
The Overcomer small group will be hosting Dave Mathewson on August 28, exploring the relationship of the church to the kingdom of God. If you are interested or have insights on this subject, feel free to join this group in the church library during the 10:45 AM service time.
Q&A TIME WITH PASTOR JEFF
Beginning in September, Pastor Jeff will be leading a question and answer time from 10:20 – 10:35 AM, between Sunday services. Join him in the Celebration Center to dig deeper into our current sermon series. Bring your questions!
Our next scheduled Baptism is the weekend of September 10/11. If you are interested in this opportunity, please let pastoral staff or the church office know by reserving a spot in one of the three orientations offered with Pastor Jeff. They will be held at 5:00 PM on August 20 and 27 or at 8:00 AM on August 28.
ANNUAL COOK TEAMS DINNER
We would like to invite all present and returning cook teams (and all who might be interested in joining a cook team) to dinner on Wednesday, August 31, at 5:30 PM in the Celebration Center. Please contact Maria by August 29 at 303.993.9358 or email@example.com to reserve your spot. We will be honoring those that served meals last year and discussing opportunities for new volunteers. Invite a friend, and see how God will use you in service in the upcoming year!
There will be a combined DV8 Student Ministries meeting on Thursday, August 25 at 6:30 PM, led by Diah Adams, for all middle and high school students. There will also be a CIY MIX Share Night & Open House on Thursday, September 1 at 6:00 PM. If you are interested in student ministry or would like to hear about the students’ experiences at CIY MIX, please join us for this event. We will return to our regular fall schedule starting September 7/8. Each of these events will take place in the Student Center.
RIDGEFEST VENDOR REGISTRATION
On Saturday, September 24, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM, we’ll be opening up the back parking lot to local vendors, complete with family games, food sales to benefit our DV8 Student Ministries and a whole lot of fun! Online vendor registration is now open on our website, so feel free to sign up for a table at the event. Begin praying about a neighbor that you might invite to one of our biggest events of the year!
