Human – The Power of the Presence of God
1 Samuel 16:14-23
Big Idea: The power of God the Holy Spirit is seen in the contrasting lives of Saul and David.
- The power of God’s absence is seen in Saul’s life.
- The power of God’s presence is seen in David’s life.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: Reflect on an experience in which music soothed your “savage” heart. Why was your heart savage in the first place?
- Saul experienced the chilling departure of God’s Spirit. As a Christian, imagine how different life would be if God’s Spirit departed from your life. Describe this state of holy departure.
- Even though God promises His perpetual spiritual presence to all Christians, what are some ways or things we might embrace to replace or challenge His Spirit’s effect in our lives?
- Has God anointed you to do something special for Him?
Taking It Home: The Apostle Paul identified nine elements of spiritual fruit being born by the Holy Spirit in every Christian’s life (Galatians 5:22-23). Be a fruit inspector and take an inventory of the developmental progress in your own life of each of those nine elements of fruit.
We are happy to welcome Earl Waggoner as our speaker this weekend. Earl is the Dean of Biblical Studies & Theology, College of Adult & Graduate Studies, at Colorado Christian University. If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. On Saturday, Earl will be available in the Celebration Center, and on Sunday, he will meet you at the Welcome Center.
TOWNHALL QUESTIONS AND RESPONSES
Thank you to all who participated in our recent Townhall meetings regarding our Live It Out initiative. The meetings specifically answered questions that had been submitted to the Elder Board. If you were unable to attend a meeting, please visit our website and click on the Live It Out banner for a link to the questions and responses that were covered during those meetings.
THANK YOU FROM THE CLARK FAMILY
Thank you to all who attended Kelly’s wedding shower and gave generous gifts. It was a great time of fellowship and we appreciate you! Please keep the Clark family in your prayers as they travel to and celebrate Kelly and Joe’s wedding in Washington, DC, on July 17. Pastor Jeff will be away for this special time from July 14 – 21.
…AND WE’RE JUST GETTING STARTED
Aspen Ridge Church will be celebrating 50 years of serving the mountain community on Saturday, August 6. The morning will begin with small group service projects for Marshdale, Evergreen Lake and Mountain Resource Center, followed by a car show (classic and 4x4) on campus. There will also be a look at our past and our future before the Saturday evening services. Begin thinking about how you and your small group might serve in the morning projects, and who you might invite to the other events of the day. If you have any questions, David and Eva Murray will have a table in the lobby this weekend, and you may also sign up for a service project there. If you have any old photos or videos to include in a short retrospective, please email those items to Communications@AspenRidgeChurch.org.
KIDS GUITAR CAMP
If you are between the ages of 8-12 and have ever wanted to learn to play guitar, this camp is for you! On August 1-4, from 9:00 – 10:15 AM, join us for a fun introduction to this amazing instrument. The cost is only $50, and you don’t have to own a guitar to participate. Contact Kerry at Kerry.Cox@AspenRidgeChurch.org to sign up.
CELEBRATING WITH OUR KIDS
Aspen Ridge Church is celebrating some of the fruit from our Vacation Bible School this year. We had thirteen conversions and six requests for baptisms – Praise God! We are following-up on the way God is moving and will notify our church family about an upcoming baptism weekend.
Eric and Kara Coe, CRU (St. Petersburg Russia)
A letter from Eric:
Some of you may have already heard, but I wanted to send a quick note to let you know that yesterday President Putin signed the law regarding missionary activity into law. The law goes into effect on July 20, 2016.
We are in the process of consulting with lawyers and other organizations to understand what impact this will have on staff, students and volunteers. The good news is that we are not alone, and that all churches and denominations are working through the same issues. However, these laws could have far-reaching impact on our mission and ministry activity.
Please pray for us and our national leadership in the coming days as we seek clarity and communicate with our staff and volunteers. Pray that our hearts would be strengthened and encouraged, and that we would be reminded of the urgency and importance of the task before us. Pray that, as an organization, we would be nimble, bold and proactive in addressing these issues. And more than anything, please pray that God would be glorified in these days, and that the end result of all of this would be men and women from the nations of Russia being gathered around the throne.
