Lend Me Your Hope - Hope Beyond Religion
1 Peter 5:1-4
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: Church leaders are to watch out for God’s people in a certain way.
- Leaders watch out for the right reasons.
- Leaders watch out for the right motives.
- Leaders watch out in the right manner.
- Leaders watch out with the right awareness.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: Christians have all had experiences with many and various church leaders. When you think of leaders that have left a positive or favorable impression on you, what qualities stand out?
- There is an intra-church solidarity required in the face of persecution (4:12-19). Church leadership is often the focus of pressure from without and within. Discuss.
- The Apostle Paul’s first qualification for elders is desire: “if anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task (1 Timothy 3:1).” What kind of aspiration to leadership do you see in today’s church?
- It is not uncommon in evangelical circles to use the title “Senior Pastor.” This title, however, is not normally associated with Jesus Christ. Peter links the term “Chief Shepherd” with Jesus Christ. What difference does Jesus as Senior Pastor make in church life?
- The Bible tells us to obey our leaders and submit to them. Since they keep watch over souls as those who will give account (Hebrews 13:17)…let them do this with joy and not groaning. How can you support your leaders this week?
Taking It Home: Aspen Ridge Church is still receiving nominations for elders in the coming year of ministry. Prayerfully review the qualifications for elder in 1 Timothy 3:1-7. Ask God to lead toward men that may be nominated for this important task.
If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. On Saturday, Pastor Jeff will be available in the Celebration Center, and on Sunday, he and his wife, Mary, will meet you at the Welcome Center.
PRAYER TIME AND EXCITING NEW INITIATIVE
We appreciate everyone who was a part of the prayer time between services during March and April. We are looking at the best way to provide this important time with a more optimal location and with leadership to make it as effective as possible. We are also extremely excited about a new "Question and Answer" forum that we will begin the weekend of June 11/12. It will be a chance to expand our discussion of the weekend message and hear insights from Pastor Jeff in a more casual, interactive setting. Please keep an eye out for more details on both the prayer time and the new "Q&A" time!
GRADUATION OPEN HOUSE
Aspen Ridge Church family, you are invited to a graduation celebration for our 2016 high school seniors! Please join us on Sunday, May 22, 1:00 – 4:00 PM, at The Barn at Evergreen Memorial Park to honor these students and their accomplishments.
The upstairs kitchen will be closed from May 26 – June 4, 2016. The Properties Ministry Team will be tearing down wallpaper and painting the walls. During this time, there will be no access to the items within the kitchen. Please plan accordingly, and look forward to an updated kitchen in June.
We are thankful for those who have indicated a desire to live it out in service in the coming ministry year. Whether you indicated your desire on one of the Live It Out envelopes or on our website, or whether you have been in prayerful consideration of where you may get involved, we’d like to invite you to a ministry overview on Wednesday, May 25. Dinner will be available for $2.50 per person at 5:30 PM, courtesy of one of our Wednesday evening Cook Teams, and there will be opportunities for you to connect with a couple of different ministry leads from 6:30 – 8:00 PM. Childcare is provided.
DV8 PARENT MEETING
There will be a very short meeting after services this weekend where you can pick up all the paperwork your teen(s) will need for summer trips. Thank you for your attendance at one of these meetings.
RETRO ROCK VBS 2016
Please be in prayer about getting involved in Vacation Bible School this year, and make sure that June 20-24 is marked on your calendar. We’re taking it back to God’s Word with “Retro Rock,” featuring the music of Go Fish. Online volunteer signups will be available soon, and positions needed include: teachers, helpers, crafts, games, snacks, Friday BBQ team and nursery. Let’s help make this summer rock!
WEDNESDAY NIGHT MENU
This week’s menu includes baked chicken, green beans, salad and dessert. The price is $2.50 per person or $10 per family.
CONVERGE 2016: REACH
Aspen Ridge Church would like to send some delegates to this year’s Converge 2016 conference with author and speaker, Francis Chan. Get a fresh take on evangelism and learn about new missions opportunities in your neighborhood and around the world. The conference will be held June 29 - July 1 at Mission Hills Church in Littleton. Please contact the church office if you are interested in representing our body at this event.
BABY BOTTLES ARE IN THE LOBBY
During the month that separates Mother’s Day from Father’s Day, Mountain Area Pregnancy Center makes baby bottles available for your donations. Fill the bottles with pocket change from wherever you drop your coins each day, (dresser, car console, etc) and return the filled bottles to church on Father’s Day, June 19. Look for bottles in the lobby. Your small change makes a big difference!
