Tell Me the Story – An Announcement to Mary
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: Gabriel announces the birth of Jesus to Mary.
- The announcement is received by an unlikely person.
- The announcement is received with a sweeping prophecy.
- The announcement is received with a supernatural event.
- The announcement is received with a favorable response.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: Recall some famous national or world-wide announcements in your life span. Which ones do you especially remember? What about these announcements stays with you?
- Describe briefly the encounter between Mary and the angel Gabriel. Compare Mary’s reaction to Gabriel with that of Zechariah. What similarities and what differences do you observe in their reactions?
- Consider the difference in what is promised to Mary and to Zechariah and what is required from each. Discuss. 3) Make a list in two parallel columns of what is foretold about John (vs 14-17) and Jesus (vs 32-35). Compare these predictions.
- Gabriel says “nothing will be impossible with God.” How does the virgin birth demonstrate this assertion? Where do you need to trust in God’s infinite power in your life?
Taking it Home: In the weeks leading up to Christmas, pray regularly for your neighbors. Follow through on a way to demonstrate God’s love in a practical way toward your neighbors. Finally, pray about an opportunity to share your faith-story with them. Follow a basic outline: prayer, care, share.
If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. On Saturday, Pastor Jeff will be available in the Celebration Center, and on Sunday, he will meet you at the Welcome Center.
This week, you should be receiving a letter in the mail, detailing our year-to-date giving. If you do not receive this letter by next weekend, please contact the church office to make sure that your mailing address is current.
HEAR MORE ABOUT THE STORY
This month, we will feature blog posts from several staff members on our website. Feel free to check them out and comment, if you’d like. Our Christmas Eve service times have moved slightly this year, to try to allow more time in the evenings for families to gather together. This is one way we’re spreading the word!
CHRISTMAS CAROL HYMN SING
All are invited to the hymn sing in the Student Center, where many of our beloved Christmas carols will be featured this month. Join us at 8:30 AM on Sunday, December 11.
Did you know that you can give back to Aspen Ridge while doing your Christmas shopping this season? If you shop on Amazon.com, simply go to smile.amazon.com to begin your shopping and choose Aspen Ridge Church as your charitable organization. They will give back a small portion of your purchase price to the church, without impacting your purchase in any way! Check it out!
LIVE IT OUT
Thanks to all who are contributing to Live It Out as we intentionally reach out to our community in practical and loving ways. To contribute, note “Live It Out” on or with your gift. Gifts (pledged and unpledged) received to date: $ 56,069
Remaining pledged amount: $ 69,382
Our Christmas Eve services will be held at 3:00 PM and 4:30 PM this year. We would love to celebrate this special time with old and new friends, rejoicing in the birth of Jesus and “telling the story.” Also, please note that on Christmas morning we will have one Family Christmas Celebration beginning at 10:00 AM, and all children are invited to attend with their families. Kids can even come in their pajamas!
DV8 CHRISTMAS PARTY
DV8’s Christmas White Elephant party will be held during student ministry times on December 14 for middle school and December 15 for high school. We would appreciate if parents could supply Christmas refreshments for these events. Please let Marty know if you can help in this way. Students need to bring a wrapped white elephant gift to be exchanged (funny, gag-type gifts - nothing serious or of monetary value).
UPCOMING BAPTISM WEEKEND
Our next Baptism Weekend is scheduled for January 7/8. If you are interested in participating, please contact the church office to sign up for an orientation meeting with Pastor Jeff. WEDNESDAY NIGHT DINNER
Please join us for dinner at 5:30 PM! This week, we will be serving baked chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad and dessert. The cost is $2.50 per person or $10 max per family.
