The Body - You are a Living Illustration
1 Corinthians 12:12-14
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: It is the same way with Jesus Christ as it is with a human body.
- The human body is one and has many members, v. 12.
- In one Spirit, we were baptized into one body, v. 13.
- The body does not consist of one member, but many, v. 14.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: There is something we all share in common: we are embodied spirits, living in and with a human body. How do prevailing centers of education think about the human body? How does our culture view the human body? How about you?
- We might have expected at the end of verse 12 something like “so also is the church.” Instead, we have “so also is Christ.” Read what the risen Christ says to the Apostle Paul about who is being persecuted (Acts 9:4). What difference does this make in how you think about God’s people?
- In verse 13, Paul is referring to their common experience of conversion, and in terms of the receiving of the Spirit. Whenever an elitist group claims to have an inside track on the full gospel, not recognized by others, divisive forces come into play. Discuss.
- The concept of membership is not so readily embraced in our culture today. Why do you think this is the case? What does membership in the local church mean, and why is this important?
Taking It Home: Our church has a description of membership in a “Church Covenant.” Please review this document on your own and with your small group. How do our concepts of church membership compare to this description? Where can you encourage and elevate church membership or take the step of church membership?
If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you and invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. On Saturday, Pastor Jeff will be available in the Celebration Center, and on Sunday, he and his wife, Mary, will meet you at the Welcome Center.
We believe that our greatest resources (apart from God Himself) include the time and talents of our people. In order to be a healthy body that is doing God's work in the world, we are seeking full participation from our members and regular attenders in service and ministry. One ministry goal this year is to increase the percentage of those who have found and are serving in a meaningful way. Our current series, “The Body,” is toward that end. This is the final weekend to pick up your family packet in the lobby. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact church leadership.
You will notice we have included in our worship folder an "Aspen Ridge Church Covenant." This is a 50-year-old statement from our church leadership, which articulates expectations for church membership. We will address this document in our weekend worship services. If you are interested in church membership, you can let us know on the attached communication card.
LOST AND FOUND
It is time to “spring clean” our lost and found closet, located downstairs next to the elevator. Please stop by and check for any of your belongings that may have found their way there. On May 1, we will be donating all items that are left.
UPGRADES TO STUDENT CENTER
This week, new lights were installed in the Student Center, which we believe will enhance ministry to generations of students. Each year, significant resources are invested in maintaining and upgrading our facility, with the diligence and effort of our Properties Ministry Team at the helm. Thanks to this team for their hard work!
DV8 GRADUATION CELEBRATION
Please mark your calendars and join us on Thursday, May 21 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM in the Student Center to honor our graduating seniors. Watch for more details coming soon!
Next weekend, we’ll be setting up the table in the lobby for volunteers to sign-up to help with our annual Vacation Bible School, June 8-12. This outreach event draws hundreds of kids and families from our area and is an amazing chance to serve our community. It takes about 95 volunteers to make it happen! Would you begin praying about where God may be calling you to serve?
WEDNESDAY NIGHT MENU
This week’s menu offers crunchy and soft tacos, salad and dessert for only $2.50 each/$10 per family. Please join us for this great time of fellowship and fun.
