Thanksgiving – Your Relationship with God
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: Give thanks for your relationship with God.
- Give thanks for your identity in God, v. 1-6.
- Give thanks for your blessings from God, v. 7-11.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: This week, we heard an opening story about how gratitude has the power to change a person’s life. Begin your meeting by sharing things for which you are grateful.
- Verse two may be translated as: “My welfare is not in addition to you.” This verse challenges the idea that people are basically good, and establishes that we cannot merit God’s favor. Discuss.
- In verse three, David honors God by honoring His people. How does this verse confront those who profess a relationship with God while detaching themselves from God’s people?
- Our community is made up of people who are happily lost. Instead of finding happiness in God, they trade this away to find happiness in someone or something else. What are the false gods that people in our harvest field worship? How do these not satisfy?
- Verses 7-11 are quoted by Peter on the day of Pentecost as being fulfilled in Christ (Acts 2:25-28). How does Jesus fulfill these verses?
- The final verse of this Psalm has much to say about finding satisfaction in God. Indeed, seeking joy in God is at the heart of the Christian life. Finding satisfaction “in God” may be distinct from finding satisfaction “from God.” Describe the difference.
Taking it Home: One way you can cultivate gratitude is by becoming a generous person. What could this generosity look like toward God and His people? How can you be generous toward your neighbors?
If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you and invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. On Saturday, Pastor Jeff will be available in the Celebration Center, and on Sunday, he and his wife, Mary, will meet you at the Welcome Center.
