Words to Build a Life On – Jesus on the 7th Commandment
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: The problem is not simply the act of adultery, but the lust that precedes the act.
- Introductory comments
- You have heard that it was said
- But I say to you
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: This portion of Jesus’ teaching has to do with incomplete thinking about the subject of adultery. The idea was that if you simply avoided the act of adultery, you were in the clear with God. Where does this kind of thinking surface in our culture today?
- Many a person has compromised their walk with God because of sexual lust. Identify a biblical figure(s) which come to mind. Then make a list of those who maintained their purity. Compare and contrast.
- Jesus’ words about plucking out your eye or cutting off your hand are figures of speech to communicate urgency. A person with only one eye or one hand is just as susceptible to lust as one with two eyes or hands. React…
- The following passages reinforce Jesus’ message to deal severely with temptations to sin. Read them and talk about their application to your life: 1 Corinthians 9:27, Galatians 5:24, Colossians 3:5.
Taking It Home: Consider the following questions privately. If you are married, is sexuality with your spouse a source of long term conflict? Are you hiding any form of sexual activity? Are you engaging in any activity that would embarrass you if your spouse walked into the room?
Are you secretly nursing fantasies or infatuations that could lead to improper behavior?
If you are visiting today, we want to extend a special welcome to you and invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. HANDS AND FEET: THANKS FOR SERVING
The summer months bring amazing opportunities to connect with and serve within our community. During the second week of June, we packed the church grounds with close to 200 energetic children and over 60 loving volunteers, all in the name of Christ. Our adult small groups have also been busy with service projects both on and off the campus...doing yard work and landscaping, cutting firewood, providing refreshments at an umpire meeting, collecting items from neighbors for EChO, assisting with furniture assembly for a new business and supplying breakfast for a group of 30 individuals at 6:00 AM, among other projects. It is encouraging to see so many needs being met in the mountain area through our small groups' love for Christ and servant hearts!
In July, The Gathering will feature multiple Aspen Ridge Church ministry teams. Please consider attending to understand the impact of and the involvement opportunities within the many ministry teams.
On Thursday, July 17, students, parents and sponsors are invited to come to a CIY Share Night in the Chapel beginning at 6:30 PM.
Middle and High Schoolers, don’t miss a day at Bear Creek Beach. We are leaving the church at 8:00 AM on Wednesday, July 23. Our summer continues to rock with a day at Elitch’s and a Newsboys concert, July 26.
