Square One - God’s Creative Work before Day One
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
Question: What happened at the beginning of the heavens and earth?
- Introduction, v. 1.
- Chaos, v. 2.
- Restoration, v. 3ff.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: The Bible does not begin with an argument for the existence of God. Rather it simply assumes or pre-supposes the existence of God. Most people do not come to faith in God as a result of reasoned
arguments. How about you?
- The opening verse of Genesis confronts atheism, materialism, pantheism, polytheism, and dualism. How prominent are these views in your circles?
- The restoration view sees v. 2 as an occasion of God’s judgment. What evidence in Scripture supports this view?
- If the opening chapters in Genesis are about a re-creation or restoration, then the age of the earth is not expressly addressed in the Bible. How do we apply this statement to different convictions people of faith have about the age of the earth?
- If the whole of the Bible is about overcoming the kingdom of evil, you and I were designed to do spiritual battle. What difference does this conviction make in the way we think about our purpose in life?
Taking It Home: God is in the business of restoring life out of chaos. Where in your life have you seen God bring restoration? Where are you trusting him to do so in the future? Send up a prayer with your group.
If you are visiting today, we want to extend a special welcome to you and invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. On Saturday, Pastor Jeff is available in the Celebration Center,
and on Sunday, Pastor Jeff and his wife Mary will meet you at the Welcome Center in the entryway.
OUR NEW SERIES HAS BEGUN
Questions about origins bubble up in life like a continual spring bubbles up with water. The questions include the following: Where did we come from? Why do people exist? How old is the earth? What is the meaning
of marriage? These are real issues that call for a meaningful, thoughtful response. More than that, they require a word from God. Having a handle on these issues will help believers engage those who have a naturalistic outlook on life and on our world. By understanding God’s design and purpose one may understand and advance the meanings behind venerable and long-standing institutions. By gaining hold of God’s intentions one can understand how things are supposed to work today. In this series we will look at origins of the universe, the world, human beings, rest, work, good & evil, and marriage. Our intention will be to view these matters in light of God’s purpose for originating His world.
