Psalms of Ascent - HELP!
Big Idea: Where does my help come from in times of evil or distress?
- My help must come in this broken world.
- My help does not come from the hills.
- My help does come from Guardian-God.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: This week we learned about God’s providence, and how we do not believe in fate, luck or chance. Can you think of times when you have been protected from something dire? How was God’s hand at work?
- This Psalm is likely written by Hezekiah, who has taken a strong stand against the godless forces of Assyria, but who now faces enemy onslaught. What kind of distress is he facing in Psalm 120? What categories of hardship are covered in Psalm 121 (references to feet slipping, sunstroke and moonstroke)?
- Jerusalem was built in the hills. However, the Psalmist was not to look to the hills for his help. The hills had been the scene of idolatry in the time leading up to Hezekiah’s reforms (Jer 3:23). How does this generation look to nature for its help? How might believers be tempted to do so?
- God is our help: there are 9 references to God in the 8 verses of this Psalm. What does Hebrews 1:3 say about God’s providence? How to do you put together God’s help alongside the existence of evil and loss?
Taking It Home: Looking back at this week’s teaching and study, what’s the most important thing to remember? Where do you need to turn to God for His gracious help?
