MESSAGE NOTES

Marriage on the Line
Malachi 2:13-16
Dr. Dave Mathewson

Summary: In Malachi chapter 2, God’s people are told that God does not accept their offerings and sacrifices to Him in the temple. The reason is that they have broken the covenant by divorcing “the wife of their youth.” This could refer to literal divorce, and/or spiritual divorce through unfaithfulness to their covenant relationship with God.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: Marriage is a topic which brings out strong emotions. What
kind of marriage did you witness between and among your parents?
Describe what a healthy marriage looks like today. Why do you think
marriage can be such a sensitive topic?

Digging Deeper:

  1. Review the passage in its entirety. What does this text tell us about
what God expects of our worship as a church? How is the church
today faithful or unfaithful to its relationship with God?
  2. What do you think are the leading causes of divorce in our society today? The statistics show that the frequency of divorce among Christians is similar to the frequency of divorce among unbelievers. Why, in your opinion, are Christian marriages just as vulnerable to divorce as other marriages?
  3. Why is marriage called a covenant? How can this provide a motivation for remaining faithful in a marriage relationship, even when we think it would be easier to give up?)
  4. How do you reconcile the strong words of God against divorce (Mal2:15-16) with God’s mercy and Jesus’ promise of forgiveness?

Taking It Home: Learn how to do relationships in the context of a
committed small group… with single and married people. In addition,
find a couple that you respect and begin to build relationships with
them. Find out what helped them stay together in the tough times. Pray
for God’s sustaining grace if you are married, and for God’s wisdom
and provision if you are not.

THIS WEEKEND AT ASPEN RIDGE CHURCH

As Pastor Jeff is away for the weekend visiting his daughter in Washington DC, we would like to welcome one of our own - Dave Mathewson to the pulpit. Dave is an Associate Professor of New Testament at Denver Seminary. If you are visiting or are new to our body, we’d love to meet you right after the service. On Saturday, Dave will be available in the Celebration Center, and on Sunday, he will meet you at the Welcome Center in the entryway.

MOPS BARN DANCE FUNDRAISER

There is only one week left to get your tickets for this fun occasion of dinner, dancing and bidding on a variety of auction items. This is a community event benefitting Aspen Ridge MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers). It will be Saturday, October 26 from 5:00 - 9:30 PM, at The Barn at Evergreen Memorial Park. Tickets are $10 each (18 and older please). The timing is perfect so you can come to The Barn at 5:00 PM, attend the Saturday night service at 6:00 PM, and come back to The Barn!

YA DIG?

The Aspen Ridge campus has been divided into 8 landscaping zones, and we need YOUR help. Adopt a zone with your family or small group, and "dig in" to get this project finished before the snow sets in! If you’ve got aspen trees that can be transplanted from your yard, let us know. We’d love to give them a home on our property. (We’re also taking over the roundabout.) Please contact Diana Blake to sign up. Find out more on our website.

FALL 2013 VOCAL ENSEMBLE BEGINS!

If you love to sing, join us every Sunday at 8:00 AM in the chapel for Vocal Ensemble. There are no auditions, just show up and sing with us. We’ll be preparing to sing several times in November and December of this year. See you there!

THE GATHERING

The Gathering is open to all – if you are dropping off youth or High School students for the 9:00 hour, consider attending this interactive, open discussion on relevant topics. We meet in Room 104. During the month of October, we are taking a look at the Reformation and this Sunday will discuss "What excesses were occurring that caused Martin Luther to nail 95 concerns to the door of his church?" The Gathering for November will feature Steve Cyphers discussing five questions that will look at the relationship between science and our faith in Jesus.

OCTOBER MINISTRY HIGHLIGHT: OUTREACH

The Outreach Team is involved in helping Aspen Ridge Church fulfill the mission of the church, to make disciples of all nations and to be witnesses of Jesus both locally and globally. We strive to facilitate these both corporately and individually. We are currently going through a review and change process to become more effective stewards of the resources (financial & people) that God has entrusted us. If you are interested in participating in that process or in getting involved in reaching our community and world, please contact Mark Whaley or Norm Lewis.

COOK TEAMS FOR WEDNESDAY NIGHT

Do you have a passion for cooking and a need to share your gift? We have just the place for you! We have openings for two new cooking teams for our Wednesday night meals, which would allow us each to cook one night a month. If you are interested, please contact Maria Stimens at 303.816.1657 – we would love to hear from you.
