(Un)Confined

In some ten days our church and community will celebrate Easter 2016. Easter is a distinctly Christian holiday that remembers the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Christians believe that this resurrection is good news, and that it makes a new relationship with God possible by faith. However, a growing number of people in our community and world do NOT believe that Christianity contains good news. Let me give you some examples…

*M. Scott Peck told of counseling a woman named Charlene who said about Christianity: “There’s no room for me in that. That would be my death! I don’t want to live for God. I will not.  I want to live for my own sake.”

*Richard Mouw wrote about how postmoderns see the gospel: “The so-called good news is in fact a bad message of oppression. The evangelizer, whether he or she is consciously aware of it or not, is promoting the control of the epistemological ‘have nots’ by providing them with a narrative that serves to reinforce their marginalization.”

*20th Century social activist Emma Goldman called Christianity “The leveler of the human race, the breaker of man’s will to dare and to do…an iron net, a strait-jacket which does not let him expand or grow.”

These perspectives beg the question: how is Easter in particular, and Christianity in general, good news? I seek to answer that question during the Easter messages the weekend of March 26-27 at the gatherings of Aspen Ridge Church. I will use the person of Abraham to describe how the Christian faith is, indeed, good news.

We will host a number of special events Easter Weekend.
