Outline For Town Hall: June 2014

  1. Introduction:
    • Welcome to our Town Hall today - - - and - - - thank you for being here today!
    • We use these town hall meetings to communicate important things about what is happening here; we appreciate that you have taken the time to participate in this meeting.
    • As we plan and make changes and continue to think about the future, we want to involve and get input from the entire church: so again, thank you!
  2. The purpose of today’s meeting is to let you know what we did recently:
    • A couple of weeks ago we brought in a consultant to help us understand ourselves better, and to give us help with exploring possible ministry strategies to implement in the near future.
    • He did that by coming here for a weekend, he observed us on Saturday night and Sunday morning, and by interviewing many people, and then giving us his observations and recommendations.
    • This consultant’s input is just the first step towards making changes in how we do ministry here; I will explain more later.
  3. Before going into the details of what he did; Why we did this:
    • First: We did not do this to change our vision - - - rather, we seek to find effective ways to implement it
      • Get on the website, review the Vision Frame, emphasize that we are not making changes
      • The Vision Frame does not say how we will accomplish the vision/mission
      • This is about the implementation of our vision: We are seeking God’s will, seeking wisdom and council, find core strategies, ministry directions, then go do it.
    • This effort started from considering a new playground and changes to youth space
      • Would the new playground be in the way of some future expansion?
      • What would an expansion look like? How soon might we do it?
        • The playground being considered could cost from $38k to $82.
        • If we don’t think this through clearly we might in a relatively short time seek to expand right through the playground and need to tear down what we had put up only a short time before!
      • It became apparent that we do not have a clear enough vision of where God might lead us to answer the playground location question.
      • We concluded that we have been too near sighted to have a clear vision of next year or the year after. We have mostly been consumed with just keeping things working for the next few days weeks and months.
      • We became concerned that we wouldn’t know what to do with success, or how to best posture ourselves to do what God would have us do.
      • What is the best way to posture ourselves in our community that best fits our vision and our people?
      • How does the facility fit into that vision? Are there some changes to our facility that are key or just plain smart to implement on the road to meeting our vision?
      • Kudos to Maryjean and her work in putting together the playground proposal and the input of the PMT, which have helped us to see the need for clarifying how we should position ourselves for future ministry opportunities.
  4. Who he is: Bob Logan, Logan Leadership, http://loganleadership.com/
    • A veteran (25+ years) church consultant and coach, for church plants and established churches, both domestic and overseas churches
    • Author of 20+ books on church health and growth, centered around helping leadership with identifying problems and road blocks in ministry, then suggesting strategies to resolve them.
    • Ongoing occasional coach for Pastor Jeff, a greatly appreciated resource
  5. What he did when he was here from Friday through Sunday on weekend of May 3:
    • Interviewed elders and wives, staff, and broad cross section of congregation (about 35 people in two sessions, worked hard to gain appropriate and adequate representation)
      • Intentionally did not include elders in most sessions to allow more frank discussion.
      • Focus of sessions, questions he asked of participants: What do you see as the strengths of this ministry? What do you see that needs improvement? What questions would you / do you ask of God as important clarifications needed as we go forward in ministry?
    • Observed facility and services (Saturday night and Sunday am)
    • Gave elders an out-brief and a report of findings and recommendations
      • Summarized discussions in the sessions, both concerns and affirmations.
      • Gave his perspective on the discussions and on what he observed
      • Gave recommendations
  6. Hand out and review Bob’s list of concerns and affirmations from the discussions
    • Please remember: This morning/evening we do not have time to hash through the details of these topics. The purpose of reviewing this is to show you the scope of what was discussed. The elders did not hear the majority of the discussion surrounding these topics.
    • Also remember: This is the raw data – this is not the solution!
    • We won’t be able to address all concerns
    • On the back side of the handout is a list of four of Bob’s observations of us, both from the discussions and from observing the services.
      • Sunday am is full, both the service and the parking lot
      • Communication with congregation needs to be improved
      • The use small groups need to be expanded
  7. What’s next:
    • Elders will be reviewing your concerns and affirmations as well as some suggestions from Bob.
    • With your input and Bob’s, will create forward strategies, plans and changes
    • Will review first set of recommended actions in another Town Hall in mid-July [date?] in time to implement first wave of changes by start of school year
      • Remember: this will be just the first implementation of changes. Expect more to follow.
    • Ongoing changes: Further out, the elders expect to create additional forward actions and review with congregation
      • As needed to meet needs, opportunities and to change things that need correcting
  8. Remember:
    • The elders and the congregation (and God!) own the vision, not Bob Logan
      • We are carefully considering Bob’s recommendations as we plan our forward steps, giving appropriate weight to his experience and wisdom; but ultimately it is our vision, strategy and detail plan.
        • Instead, I believe that as a result of Bob Logan’s input to us that we have a better perspective of ourselves, both strengths and weaknesses, as well as several solid ideas for us to consider in helping to make us a better missional bride of Christ, in outreach and in becoming more mature.

  9. What can you do? Please pray with us!
    • For the elders to be keenly aware of our dependence on God for the outcome:
      • Psalm 127:1 “Unless the Lord builds the house, - - - - - “
    • For clear thinking and wise input as we decide what changes to make.
    • For God’s will to be apparent: for unity and single-mindedness among the elders.
    • That the body would enjoy unity and effective, joyful ministry from these changes.

Key Observations By Bob Logan From Weekend of 5/3/14

  1. The Sunday morning worship service is effectively full, in the sanctuary and in the parking lot.
    • Chairs 90% full in worship service, parking lot is even more full.
  2. Communication needs improvement: Peoples’ questions show that they are not adequately tied‐in to ministry changes and direction (both the what and the why).
  3. We are under‐utilizing the small group approach to ministry. The small group mentality needs to be applied more broadly (treat ministry teams as small groups, as well as childrens’ Sunday School), and used more effectively (for example, consider using it as the primary church‐wide communication tool).
